Obesity and Bariatric Procedures

The term ''morbid obesity'' is defined as being approximately 100 pounds or more over the ideal body weight, or having a body mass index of 40 or more. The term ''morbid'' means unhealthy or diseased. Morbid obesity has been shown to decrease the life expectancy of an individual and significantly reduces the quality of life.

Obesity is often combined with one or more related health conditions called ''comorbid conditions.'' A comorbid condition is any condition associated with obesity that increases the risk of disability and premature death. Comorbid conditions usually worsen as obesity increases and improve as the obesity is successfully treated. The presence of any comorbid condition increases your health risks. An increased risk for death has been shown for a Body Mass Index (BMI) greater than 27. Obese individuals who lose even a small amount of weight (5 to 10 percent of initial body weight) are likely to improve their health in the short run by reducing the severity of the conditions associated with obesity.

Open Roux-en-y gastric bypass
In a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, the stomach is made smaller by creating a small pouch at the top of the stomach with surgical staples. The smaller stomach is connected directly to the middle portion of the small intestine (jejunum), bypassing the rest of the stomach and the upper portion of the small intestine (duodenum). This procedure can be done by making a large incision in the abdomen (an open procedure).

Laparoscopic Roux-en-y gastric bypass
The same procedure as above can be performed by making a several small incisions and using small instruments and a camera to guide the surgery (laparoscopic approach). Some of the benefits of having a laparoscopic gastric bypass include smaller incisions, reduced pain after surgery, shorter hospital stay, shorter recovery time and reduced risk of infection. The laparoscopic procedure is not right for everyone. During your one-on-one consultation with Dr. Huse, he will let you know if you qualify for this procedure.

Revision Roux-en-y gastric bypass
A Revision Roux-en-y gastric bypass is a surgery to repair a complication from a previous bariatric surgery such as a fistula, gastric outlet obstruction or a staple line disruption. Not all patients that have had a gastric bypass will qualify for a Revision Roux-en-y for multiple reasons. These reasons will be discussed with you at your consultation, should Dr. Huse feel that you would not benefit from revising the previous surgery.
